Dr. Jan Clifford Lester

Dr. Lester is Chairman of the Annual Conference on the Thought of Karl Popper. He is a Visiting Academic at Middlesex University. His main research interest in Popper's ideas is their application to political philosophy. In particular, he applies critical rationalism to libertarianism: the view that people should be free to do what they wish with their persons and property as long as they do not interfere with the like liberty of others.

This is the approach he takes in his book Escape from Leviathan: Liberty, Welfare and Anarchy Reconciled (Macmillan, 2000). In "Popper's Epistemology versus Popper's Politics" (Journal of Social and Evolutionary Systems, 17; 3, 1994) he argues that libertarian anarchy is a better analogue of critical rationalism than Popper's preferred liberal democracy.
